Turtle Eaten Bread

Once upon a misty pond edge, I, Mortimer the ancient turtle, woke with a peculiar crunch in my shell. Yesterday, a careless picnicker had left half a loaf of golden bread by the water. Curiosity, that sly river current, pulled me forward. With my beak, I nibbled the soft crust, tasting yeast and warmth foreign to my usual algae and worms. The bread dissolved like summer rain on lily pads, filling my belly with an unexpected lightness.

Now, as dawn painted the reeds gold, I felt transformed. No longer content to lumber through mud, I paddled with unusual vigor. The bread had given me wings of imagination! I dreamed of racing ducks, scaling mossy logs like mountains, and whispering secrets to frogs who blinked in disbelief. "Mortimer," they croaked, "you move like the wind today." I chuckled deep in my throat, my shell gleaming with newfound confidence.

Yet wisdom tempered my joy. Bread was a fleeting gift—sweet but fleeting, unlike the steady greens that sustained my centuries. I retreated to my favorite rock, sun warming my back, reflecting on life's surprises. Humans scatter crumbs of wonder everywhere, but true strength lies in patience and the slow, deliberate stroke through water.

From that day, I became the turtle who had tasted the extraordinary. Neighbors gathered at twilight, begging tales of my "eaten bread" adventure. I shared how one simple bite reminded me: even the oldest shell can embrace change. The pond rippled with laughter, and I sank contentedly into the depths, belly full, heart fuller.
